Vaping Glossary

18650 – refers to a specific size of rechargeable, Li-Ion battery popularly used in APVs, mechanical and tube mods.

2-piece – refers to an electronic cigarette consisting of a battery and a cartomizer/clearomizer.

3-piece – refers to an electronic cigarette consisting of a battery, atomizer and cartridge.

306 (aka LR306) – the 306 is a 510 threaded, low resistance (LR) atomizer. Many PV users of devices with 510 connectors prefer LR306 atomizers as they produce more heat than many other atomizers and may increase vapor production giving a stronger throat hit.

401, 402, and 403 (m401, m402, and m403) – refer to different lengths of electronic cigarettes (cig-a-likes).

510 – the most popular and common style of threading for electronic cigarettes available. Developed by one of the first e-cigarette manufacturers, it was widely adapted by many device manufacturers. 510 threads on the battery, or battery-containing component, are usually male, while the threading on 510 tanks, is usually female.

A

Adapter – a dual threaded device (with one male side, and one female side) used to allow a specific style or type of tank, atomizer, cartomizer, or clearomizer to fit onto a battery of device with a different type of threading. (example: connecting a 901 threaded atomizer onto a 510 battery)

Advanced Personal Vaporizer (APV) – an APV usually consists of larger battery capacity, and features such as variable voltage, variable wattage, battery life indication, and puff count. An APV may also be referred to as a modified e-cig (Mod).

All Day Vape (ADV) – that Wildside, Origins, Tradewinds or Retro ejuice (of course!) that you personally enjoy over any other eliquid flavor, and can vape it all day long without it getting old. AKA- your Go-To-Juice!

AWG (American Wire Gauge) – the standard used in the United States to designate the diameter of electric wire that is used to create the coils in e-cig atomizers.

Amperage (amps) – Amperage is a measurement of the rate of flow of electrical energy flowing through a circuit. In APV’s the lower the amps, the less capable the circuit is in handling high voltages in combination with low resistance atomizers.

Analog (Analog Cigarette) – a slang term used by the vaping community that refers to traditional, combustible cigarettes.

Anodizing – a process used to seal and finish aluminium by means of oxidation

APV – See Advanced Personal Vaporizer

Aqueous Glycerine (AG) – Vegetable Glycerin (VG) that has been thinned with deionized water, making it less viscous (thick) for easier pourability, and more amenable for use in certain tanks.

Atomizer (aka Atty) – an atomizer is a component of an electronic cigarette which is contained in a metal housing and screwed onto the battery. This component contains the heating coil, wick and a mesh bridge used to heat up and vaporize the eliquid.

Automatic – a style of electronic cigarette/vaporizer battery that does not have a button to activate the heating element. When the user draws on the mouthpiece, a special sensor within the atomizer is activated by changing air pressure, allowing for instant vapor production.

Automatic Shutoff – a common safety feature found on personal vaporizers that automatically shuts off the device after a preset amount of time passes without any use.

B

Battery (batt) – the portion of an electronic cigarette, APV, Mod, etc., that provides power to the heating element which turns the e-liquid into vapor. Battery can refer to a traditional rechargeable Li-Ion battery that is housed in a box or similar casing, to a one-piece, decorated unit with a switch that attaches directly to an atomizer tank, or other component which heats the e-liquid.

BCC (Bottom coil clearomizer)
 – an atomizer coil that is positioned at the bottom of a clearomizer tank.

BDC (Bottom Dual-Coil Clearomizer) – a bottom coil clearomizer with 2 coils.

Box Mod – a Mod, PV or APV that comes in a box shape.

BP – slang for “big pharmaceutical” companies.

Brick and Mortar (B&M) – a physical store where you can buy electronic cigarettes or vaping related products.

Bridge – a small, u-shaped, metal, mesh piece on the inside of an atomizer that acts to protect the coil and to wick the e-liquid from the cartridge.

BT – slang for “big tobacco” companies.

Burner – slang for a traditional, combustible cigarette/cigar

C

Cartridge (Cart) – a disposable plastic or metal tube filled with with absorbent filler material that holds e-liquid. It is part of a 3-part e-cig consisting of the battery, atomizer and cartridge.

Cartomizer (Carto) – a cartomizer or carto is a combination of a disposable cartridge and an atomizer. It is part of a 2-part electronic cigarette consisting of a battery and a cartomizer.

Cartomizer Punch (Carto Punch) – a device used for punching holes in cartomizers, in attempts to affect draw tension and e-juice flow.

Cartomizer: Single Coil – a standard cartomizer that uses 1 coil to produce vapor.

Cartomizer: Dual Coil (DCC) – a cartomizer that uses 2 coils in order to increase vapor production.

CASAA acronym for Consumer Advocacy for Smoke-Free Alternatives Association, a non profit organization that campaigns for the rights of e-cig users.

Cig-A-Like – any electronic cigarette or personal vaporizor that has a similar appearance of a traditional cigarette.

Clearomizer – a transparent version of a cartomizer, that allows users to see how much e-liquid is remaining. Clearomizers typically hold 2 to 3ml of e-liquid, and include a Top Coil, Bottom Coil (BCC) or Bottom Dual Coil (BDC) configuration.

Cloud(s) – refers to the vapor that is exhaled when using electronic cigarettes.

Cloud Chasing – refers to the activity of electronic cigarette / Mod users tweaking their hardware and e-juice selections to produce ever bigger and thicker clouds of vapor, to obtain bragging rights in casual and in competitive situations known as Cloud Competitions.

Cloud Competition – see Cloud Chasing

Coil – the heating element that, when electricity passes through it, is used to vaporize the e-liquid in an vaping device. The metal coil is usually made up of Nickel, Nichrome or Kanthal wire.

Cone Threads – a threading type used by some companies touted to provide better connection between their atomizer and the battery

Connection – usually refers to the threaded piece of the battery to which an atomizer/cartomizer/clearomizer is connected.

Custom Mod – any PV or APV that is (usually) handmade or in limited production, and is not available as a mass production item. Many material types are used including metal, plastic and wood to produce custom Mods, and creators often take great great pride in their works, viewing them as one-off works of art.

Cut-Off – a safety feature that automatically discontinues power to an electronic vaping device after a pre-determined length of time, or after a pre-defined activity. It prevents the atomizer from overheating and being destroyed. Power is able to be restored after a waiting period, or upon resetting of the circuit.

D

DCA / 306DCA – abbreviation for a 306 Drip Cup Adapter

DCT (Dual Coil Tank) – a tank, usually capable of holding 3-6ml of e-juice, with a replaceable dual coil atomizer.

De-wick – removing the wick from an atomizer. The wicks in many RDAs/RBAs can be removed and replaced, allowing for new wicking material to be installed.

Digital Cigarette – another name for Electronic Cigarette

Disposable e-Cigs – electronic cigarettes that are designed to be used and then thrown away once the unit discontinues to produce vapor.

DIY (Do-It-Yourself) – refers to the activity of making your own e-liquid. Many instructions, recipes, guides and community pages are available online.

DNA – refers to a small, variable wattage circuit board, designed and built by EVOLV, LLC for modders. Different variations of the board are produced, with it’s more common variation capable of producing 40watts of power.

Draw – refers to the amount of force required to accommodate inhalation through the mouthpiece of an e-cig.

Drip (Dripping) – refers to the activity of “dripping” drops of e-liquid directly onto an atomizer. Many enthusiasts claim that dripping provides the best flavor and vapor production over other methods of vaping.

Drip Kit – a vaping device configuration consisting of a battery, atomizer chamber, and drip tip, designed specifically for dripping.

Drip Shield – a round metal or plastic tube that slips over an atomizer, designed to minimize leaking of e-liquid. Excess ejuice flowing from the wicking material will be redirected back to the wicking material instead of leaking onto the PV, so it can be available to be vaporized by the atomizer.

Drip Tip – a mouthpiece accessory with a large enough opening to allow drops of e-juice to be dripped directly to the atomizer/cartomizer without the removal of the tip.

Drip Well – a recessed area around the connector on an APV or Mod that is designed to catch any e-liquid that might leak out from the air vents at the base of the atomizer/tank/cartomizer, etc. Also may refer to a recessed area around the coil connectors of an RDA designed to catch excess juice and hold wicking material.

Dry Burn/Hit – occurs when a coil is electrified and heats up, while the wick is not saturated. Dry burns can be done intentionally in an attempt to clean a coil, burning off impurities, while the user does not inhale. A dry hit is usually the unintentional result of allowing a wick to run dry, producing a foul, burnt taste accidentally (and regrettably) inhaled by the user.

Dual-Coil Cartomizers – a type of cartomizer with two coils (also see Cartomizer).

E

ECF(E-Cigarette-Forum.com) – one of the largest e-cigarette and vaping related forums and information portals on the internet.

eGo/eGo Style – a style of electronic cigarettes. The eGo battery is designed with integrated circuitry and is available in a variety of sizes, features, colors and designs.

e-Juice – aka: e-liquid, smoke juice, nic juice, eJuice, eLiquid, smoke oil – it is the liquid component, often containing nicotine, that is vaporized in electronic cigarettes and vaping devices, to be inhaled by the user. Usually comprised of flavoring, diluents (fillers) such as vegetable glycerin and/or propylene glycol, deionized water, and may or may not contain nicotine.

Ekowool – a brand of braided silica filament that may be used to as wicking material for rebuildable atomizers.

Electronic Cigar – comprised of the same components of an ecig, an e-cigar larger, and shaped to resemble a traditional tobacco cigar.

Electronic Cigarette Association (ECA) – an industry group formed in early 2009 that is made up of suppliers and manufacturers who combined resources to increase lobbying power and share information, and promote the e-cigarette as a legal option for smokers in the USA.

Electronic Cigarette (e-cig) – an alternative to traditional cigarettes which gives smokers a better alternative to smoking without many of the harmful side effects associated with the combustion (burning) of tobacco. eCigs contains e-liquid that is vaporized upon inhalation and usually consists of flavoring, diluents (fillers) such as vegetable glycerin and/or propylene glycol, deionized water, and nicotine.

Electronic Cigarette Starter Kit – an Electronic Cigarette Starter Kit is an entry-level grouping of components often including 2 batteries, 1 or 2 cartomizers/atomizers/clearomizers and a mouthpiece or drip tip.

E-Liquid aka: eLiquid, e-Juice, eJuice, smoke juice, nic juice, smoke oil, vape juice- it is the liquid component, often containing nicotine, that is vaporized in electronic cigarettes and vaping devices, to be inhaled by the user. Usually comprised of flavoring, diluents (fillers) such as vegetable glycerin and/or propylene glycol, deionized water, and may or may not contain nicotine.

E-Smoke – another slang for an electronic cigarette.

F

Filler Material (Filler) – material placed inside of a cartridge/cartomizer that is absorbent. It is used to absorb and contain the e-liquid inside of the cartridge and regulate its flow to the atomizer, for consistent, continuous vaporization.

Flavor Cartridge – another term for a cartridge containing e-liquid.

Flooding – occurs when too much e-liquid is put into the atomizer, inhibiting vapor production. Flooding is indicated by a gurgling sound when drawing from the mouthpiece, with little or no vapor production.

Food and Drug Administration (FDA) – a federal agency of the United States Department of Health and Human Services that writes and oversees rules and regulations pertaining to the safety of food and drug products sold within the United States.

Fuse – a specially designed electrical component for use in mechanical Mods to help safeguard against some types of Li-Ion battery failure.

G

Genesis Atomizer – an advanced (not for beginners) rebuildable atomizer (RBA) that uses stainless steel mesh as a wick, and sits on the top of a tank (usually glass) with one or more holes in the deck leading down into the tank. Users claim that this setup gives the taste and flavor of a dripping atomizer, with the added convenience of a tank.

GG (Golden Greek) – a brand of quality mechanical Mods produced in Greece.

Glassomizer – a clearomizer using glass, rather than plastic, for the tank. Examples include the Kanger Protank, and the Nautilus by Aspire.

Goose Neck – a mouthpiece extension for your PV that resembles a goose’s neck. Goose necks are available in assorted colors and sizes.

GRAS (Generally Recognized as Safe) – an acronym coined by the FDA to denote that a product or substance is considered safe to be used under the conditions of its intended use.

H

High Resistance (HR) – an atomizer or cartomizer with a higher Ohm rating than the standard equipment.

Hit – refers to a single draw and inhalation of vapor.

Hot Spot – area of excess heat on an atomizer coil. Hot spots are a known cause of dry hits (see Dry Hits).

HV (High Voltage) – denotes a device that operates above the standard 3.7 volts.

HV Atty – an atty (atomizer) designed for use with a high voltage device; not for use with standard batteries due to low power and potential battery failure.

HV Mod – a dual battery or boosted supply Mod which allows higher vaping at higher power/voltage.

Hybrid, Hybrid PV, Hybrid Mod – a combined topper and battery/battery holder that is designed to connect together, or is build together as one seamless unit.

I

ICR – Lithium Ion Cobalt Rechargeable Battery

IMR – Lithium Ion Manganese Rechargeable Battery

Inhale – the act of taking vapor into the lungs.

J

Juice – another name for e-liquid.

K

Knuckle Head – a type of drip tip that can be adjusted to any desired angle.

Kanthal Wire brand of iron-chromium-aluminium (FeCrAl) alloy wire used in high temperature applications, including coils used in many rebuildable atomizers.

Kanthal, Kanthal A1 – a specific grade of Kanthal wire which is widely recognized as the ideal wire for coil use.

L

Liquid – also referred to as e-liquid, e juice, smoke juice, or just juice. This is the-liquid that is vaporized when using an electronic cigarette. (see e-Liquid)

Li-Po – Lithium Polymer rechargeable battery.

Lithium Ion Batteries (Li-Ion) – considered the strongest and most powerful batteries in the electronic cigarette market. Li-Ions are available in many different sizes and shapes and in various mAh ratings.

Low Resistance (LR) – an atomizer or cartomizer or coil with a lower Ohm rating than the standard equipment. Caution should be taken when matching the resistance of components with a device’s circuitry and a battery’s capabilities.

M

mA – 1/1000th of an amp. This number is most often used in reference to the output of chargers.

mAh – abbreviation for Milliamperes per hour, which is used to describe the capacity, or energy charge, of a battery. Higher mAh capacity batteries can deliver the same power as a lower mAh battery of the same voltage, but for a longer period of time.

Manual – an eCig battery style that has a button that activates the heating element.

Manual Shut-Off – a safety feature found on most manual vaporizer devices that allows the user to turn off the battery with a combination of clicks of the button, in order to make it ready for transport.

Mechanical Mod (Mech Mod, Mech PV, Mech) – an low-tech electronic cigarette which contains no special electronics or wiring. Mech Mods are comprised of a metal tube which holds a battery, a mechanical switch and a connector for a topper/atomizer/tank.

Microcomputer/Microprocessor – a smart microchip that signals the battery to send a charge of power to the atomizer, effectively “firing” the e-cigarette, and allows other features such as LEDs and “puff” counts.

mg – see Milligram

mg strength – denotes the amount of nicotine (in miligrams) contained within one milileter of e-liquid. Written as mg/mL (milligrams per millileter (mL)) for example, an “8mg e-juice” would contain 8mg of nicotine in each 1 mL of e-liquid.

Micro coil – a type of wire coil where the coil is wrapped tightly and with a short radius, so that the loops of the coil are all touching. Micro-coils usually require more wraps than a traditional coil to provide similar resistance (Ohm).

Milligram (mg) – a metric unit of mass equal to one one-thousandth (1/1000) of a gram. In electronic cigarettes, refers to the amount of nicotine that is contained in 1 mL of ejuice. Typical levels include 0mg, 6mg, 8mg, 12mg, 16mg, 18mg, and 24mg (all per mL).

Milliliter (mL) – aka mills – a metric measurement of volume equal to 1cm x 1cm x 1cm. Also known as 1cc (cubic centimeter).

Mod/MOD – short for modification. A Mod originally referred to the modification of a flashlight or a battery to be used in vaping, but today, commonly refers to any vaping device that is not a cig-a-like.

Mouthpiece – refers to the open end of an e-cig that the user places to their mouth, and puffs from to inhale vapor. Mouthpieces can be in the form of a drip tip, cartridge, or even the tapered end of a tank.

MV (Multi-Voltage) – MVs are less-common PVs that offer different preset voltage settings selectable by the user.

N

Nichrome Wire – a type of resistance wire used in some atomizer coils. Patented in 1905, it is made from nickel, chromium, and (often) iron. A common ratio is 80% nickel to 20% chromium. Nichrome is generally considered the inferior to Kanthal, of the two commonly used atomizer coil materials in cartomizers/clearomizers/atomizers.

Nic Juice – see E-Liquid

Nicotine (Nic) – Nicotine is an alkaloid chemical, naturally present in tobacco, eggplant and other plants of the nightshade family. It can be produced by extraction from plant materials, as well as produced synthetically in laboratories. Nicotine is an addictive substance, and its alkaloids have been associated with the pleasurable sensations described by some users. Nicotine is commonly known for being found within traditional and electronic cigarettes at various strengths; however, because it is an additive in e-Liquids, 0mg versions of e-liquids are available that truly contain NO NICOTINE, yet afford users the vapor production, and provide them with a nicotine-free alternative to smoking.

Nicotine Level – refers to the concentration of nicotine in an e-Liquid, measured in mg/mL. See mg strength

Nicotine-Liquid – see e-Liquid.

NiMH – Nickel-Metal Hydride: a type of battery containing no cadmium, and no “memory effect” resulting in its ability to be charged or topped-off at any time without affecting battery life.

NRT – acronym for Nicotine Replacement Therapy

O

Ohm (O) – the standard unit of electrical resistance, named after German physicist Georg Simon Ohm. A lower number indicates lower resistance and therefore faster heating of a coil, as a result of higher wattage.

Organic Cotton – a material used by many RDA/RBA users as the wicking material which draws e-liquid into the coil to be vaporized.

P

Passthrough – a feature of some advanced personal vaporizers which allows a user to charge their device via a USB port, while continuing to vape or use their e-cig.

PCC – a common acronym for Personal (or portable) Charging Case. A PCC provides a case for storage, while charging the battery while away from other power sources.

PEG (Polyethylene Glycol) – a less common ingredient found in some e-liquids. Used as a diluent (to dilute flavors and act as a filler); more common diluents include PG (propylene glycol) and VG (vegetable glycerin).

Pen Style – one of the many choices of electronic cigarettes available, which resembles in size and shape, the design of a ball-point pen.

Personal Vaporizer (PV) – another name for an e-cigarette.

Propylene Glycol (PG) – a viscous, colorless, nearly odorless organic compound that is widely used as a diluent (a filler and diluting agent) in the food, pharmaceutical and cosmetics industries. Propylene glycol is one of two most common, main ingredients used in the production of e-liquids used in the electronic cigarette industry, due to its unsurpassed reputation for safety, and long history of use in pharmaceuticals including oral, inhalable and intravenous medications.

PGA (Pure Grain Alcohol) – sometimes used in small amounts as a diluting agent for flavorings and 100% VG (due to it’s high viscosity) used in the production of e-liquids. It is recommended that only the highest “proof,” non-denatured, legally-obtained grain alcohol (ethanol) is used in the thinning of VG, and included at a maximum of 5% by volume in any e-liquid product.

Pipe Style – a style of electronic cigarette resembling a traditional tobacco pipe. Also referred to as an e-Pipe.

Poly-fill – a type of filler material used in come cartridges and cartomizers/clearomizers made from polyester resin fibers.

Protected (batteries) – an advanced battery design containing a microchip which acts to protect the circuit in the event of an extreme load or temperature variance on the cell.

Puff – a short drawing action on the mouthpiece of an e-cig, pulling vapor into the user’s mouth.

R

Rebuildable Atomizer (RBA) – an atomizers with a user-serviceable/rebuildable design. Various configurations exist allowing for different coil and wicking materials including mesh, cotton and Ekowool. Rebuildable atomizers allow rebuilders to save on cost and afford the greatest flexibility in design and personalization.

RDA (Rebuildable Dripping Atomizer) – an RBA that is designed for dripping. Often, RBA and RDA are used interchangeably.

Resistance – a measurement of a the degree to which a conductor opposes electrical current through that conductor; measured in ohms. In e-cigs, coils and atomizers are often available in two main classifications: low and standard resistance.

Resistance Wire – a type of electrical wire that is used in atomizer coils, which, when electricity is applied, heats up an acts to vaporize the e-juice. Resistance wire is most commonly either Nichrome or Kanthal.

Ribbon Kanthal, Ribbon Wire, Ribbon – a type of resistance wire used for building coils which has a flat cross-section, rather than round, providing more surface area to conduct heat to the e-liquid. Users of ribbon wire claim that it provides better vapor and flavor production than traditional, round resistance wire.

S

Sensor – an electronic component used in advanced e-cigarette batteries which can detects when the user is taking a puff, and can automatically provide power to the atomizer, this eliminating the need to press a button.

Silica – a braided cord material used for building wicks. It has a very high melting point, and often preferred over cotton or polyester because it can be cleaned with an open flame like a butane torch without degrading the material.

Smart Chip – a computer chip located within a personal vaporizer battery giving it advanced functionality over a simple circuit design.

Smoke Juice – see E-Liquid.

Smokeless Cigarette – another, less-common term for an electronic cigarette, stemming from the fact that no actual smoke is produced or inhaled while using an e-cigarette.

Stacking – a risky practice of stacking batteries end-to-end in attempts to create more power than one battery alone can deliver.

Standard Resistance – refers to the typical “band” of ohm ratings within which most atomizers used in PVs fall – typically between 1.8 to 3.0 ohms.

Starter Kit – see Electronic Cigarette Starter Kit

Steeping – the activity of allowing an e-liquid to sit, either to open- air, or in a sealed container, after creation and before consumption, to allow for maximum flavor development. Steeping is generally not necessary with e-liquids that have a high ratio of PG to VG. Flavor changes are more often noticeable in e-liquids with high concentrations of VG.

Stick Style – another term for an electronic cigarette that resembles the look of a traditional, combustible cigarette.

Sub-Ohming – a practice employed by experienced modders, using atomizers rated below 1 ohm, and increasing the amperage capacity of their devices, using specialized batteries (using the principles of Ohms Law), to increase wattage, in attempts to produce ever larger clouds.

Sweet Spot – a combination of several variables that, when combined together, culminate in a more satisfying vape. These variables most commonly include voltage, wattage, resistance, and the flashpoint of the juice being vaped.

T

Tailpiping – a slang term that refers to direct dripping, and vaping without the use of a drip tip.

Tank – a threaded reservoir that holds considerably more-liquid than cartridges/cartomizers/clearomizers, and contains no absorbent filler material. Can be used in combination with a cartomizer, or may may house an atomizer which wicks your smoke juice directly into/onto the coil from the tank.

Thermal Runaway – a rare but extremely serious and dangerous occurrence when a chain reaction in a lithium based battery results in overheating, bursting and possibly even ignition. The causes of thermal runaway include overcharging, short circuiting, stacking batteries, physical damage to the battery, faulty wiring among other electronic malfunctions.

Throat Hit – the sensation an e-cigarette vaper (and tobacco smoker) may experience when the vapor hits the back of their throat. Many new vapers desire it to feel like a cigarette with a full, yet smooth hit. The ingredient PG is mostly associated with delivering the throat hit in e-cigs, while e-liquids of a higher VG concentration produce little, if any throat hit sensation. Heat of the vapor may also add to this sensation.

Tobacco Harm Reduction (THR) – a policy or practice of providing less harmful nicotine-containing products, as an alternative to the more risky, harmful, traditional tobacco products still on the market.

Toot slang term for a puff, pull or to draw from an electronic cigarette.

Topper – refers to a device that comprises the top of an electronic cigarette and attaches to the battery/battery holder.

Topping Off – adding a few drops of e-liquid into a cartridge, cartomizer or tank, to fill it to capacity.

Triple-Coil Cartomizer – a type of cartomizer designed with three coils, providing approximately 1.6 ohms of resistance. The addition of extra coils, lowers the overall resistance, thus increasing the wattage. Triple-coils produce slightly more vapor than dual-coils, and are available in various sizes.

Tube Mod – any PV or APV designed in a tube shape, and a size similar to that of a small flashlight.

U

Unprotected Battery – any lithium based battery that has no protective circuit or fuse to safeguard against overcharging or other situations that may cause thermal runaway.

USB Passthrough – See Passthrough.

V

Vaper – refers to a user of an electronic cigarette, The term vaper stems from an e-cig’s production of vapor, rather than smoke; thus users vape, not smoke.

Vape Safe (Fuse) – The Vape Safe Fuse is a penny-sized, disc shaped fuse for use with a Mods. The fuse is an added layer of safety, in addition to a good quality battery, against catastrophic battery failure.

Vapor – the steam-like fog produced by the atomization of e-liquid in an electronic cigarette. Vapor is the visible factor which simulates smoke, but with far fewer health risks than those associated with burning tobacco, providing users with a much safer alternative to smoking.

Vaporizer – a vaporizer is a device which converts a liquid into a gas or vapor. Vaporizer is another term used to describe an electronic cigarette, ecig or PV.

Vapor Production – Refers the the amount of vapor that is produced when an e-liquid is vaporized. Factors include the composition of the e-liquid, as well as the type and characteristics of the device being used.

Vaping – the act of using an electronic cigarette, named so because of vaping’s production of vapor, rather than the smoke produced by cigarettes and other more traditional, burned tobacco products.

Vent holes – a small hole or series of holes in the cap or chamber of the battery compartment of a Mod or PV, designed to vent harmful gases in the event a battery develops into a rare, yet serious state of thermal runaway.

VG (Vegetable Glycerin) – a colorless, viscous (thick) organic compound that acts as a diluent, or filler, and is a common ingredient found in e-liquid, as well as many food, cosmetics and pharmaceutical products. Glycerin has a light, sweet taste, low toxicity, and is thicker than Propylene Glycol. Glycerin is used at higher ratios in juices when thicker, richer vapor production is desired or where a PG sensitivity of the user is present.

Voltage – refers to the electrical potential of a power source.

VV (Variable Voltage) – any advanced electronic cigarette or APV that allows the user direct control over the voltage output of their device, allowing the user to vary the temperature that the atomizer heats to, and thus affecting flavor and vapor production.

VW (Variable Wattage) – any advanced electronic cigarette or APV that allows the user direct control over the wattage, or power used by their device, allowing the user to vary the temperature that the atomizer heats to, and thus affecting flavor and vapor production. VW is considered superior to VV, as it provides a more consistent temperature of atomization over time, and when swapping atomizers of different ohm ratings, without having to make adjustments to account for greater, or lower resistance vaporizing components.

W

Watt (wattage) – The amount of power consumed at the atomizer coil used to vaporize an e-liquid. Think of a 25 watt incandescent bulb vs a 100 watt incandescent bulb: a 100 watt bulb burns brighter, puts off more heat, and uses more energy to do so, than does the 25 watt bulb.

Wick – a wick is any material that conveys e-juice through itself or from a reservoir via capillary action, and delivers it to the coil in an electronic cigarette. Many atomizers use wicks made from silica, however, wicks can be made from steel mesh, fiberglass, cotton, and even ceramic materials.
